Why I chose to purchase this book:
I didn’t purchase this book. It was a gift from a lovely friend who knows how interested I am in all things business and pink.
When I opened the gift I was over the moon to find this little book inside as I had been planning to buy it but hadn’t seen it anywhere yet. Being a fan of Roxy Jacenko, I was looking forward to reading about her advice on business and career.
I decided to take it to the airport for a trip to Sydney and I finished it over the two flights.
Thoughts:
Look, I am a Roxy Jackenko fan. In my eyes, she is an amazing businesswoman who has an unmatchable passion for her work. Roxy’s work ethic and passion for her business are what initially drew me to follow her on Instagram. Her insane designer style also was a big drawcard.
Roxy’s little black book of tips & tricks is physically a small book. It’s barely 150 pages and its not much bigger than my hand. If this was a fiction novel, the small size would put me off, but for a business book, it’s great. I was able to have it stashed in my handbag and not take up half the space of the bag.
Roxy Jacenko writes as she speaks. There were a few lines throughout the book that I was cringing while reading, but that’s Roxy. she says whats she is thinking and that’s amazing.
The book isn’t just for people working/wanting to work in PR. Chapter 1 is all about career advice. Its simple advice. For example, Roxy advises to be on-time and project good body language. This advice sounds so obvious but while reading it I was sitting there like oh my god, I need to sharpen up my body language and tone down my resting bitch face in the office.
Chapter 2 is advice on starting and running a successful business. The third chapter is all about PR (public relations). Although I am not in the PR industry, I found this part of the book interesting. If you are a running a business, knowing as much as you can about PR is vital in this day and age.
Chapter 4 is all about social media and making it work for you and your business which is something Roxy is undoubtedly capable in. The final chapter is simple, straight forward and titled Life. One of the subheadings is ‘be a decent human’ which is simply brilliant in itself.
Should you read it?
If you’re not into excelling in your career or business, I would suggest you read this. Roxy Jacenko has written this book for the go-getters, the hustlers and the people with dreams of furthering their career/business. Anyone not interested in business and careers or people just looking for a fun read, probably don’t run out and buy this.
However, if you are looking for a bit of motivation for branding your business, dominating social media and becoming an amazing employee then run out and buy this book now.
I really enjoyed reading Roxy’s book and plan on implementing a number of her tips immediatly.
